demand for skilled workers, Budget Secretary Florencio Abad said.
He said vacancies in calls centers, back office and customer-related services has been growing every year and some BPO companies have started moving out to major cities outside of Metro Manila where skilled workers were available.
“Some BPO companies are exploring ‘second wave’ cities such as Cagayan de Oro, Butuan and Bacolod where they could recruit personnel,” Abad said.
From about 2,400 workers in 2001, the BPO industry now employs an estimated 200,000 in 120 companies. The Philippines has overtaken Malaysia and India and is set to challenge Chinas the world’s biggest BPO employer.
The Philippines earned $11 billion and employed 900,000 people in 2010. Industry experts estimate the gross revenue to $25 billion by 2016.
Abad said some BPO companies have entered into partnerships with state universities and colleges to train students on particular skills to become call center agents.
He said the government has also considered recalling Filipinos working abroad and provide them with skills on animation, medical transcription and web design to close the gap between supply and demand.
“The government is heavily investing in upgrading technical- vocational centers in order to be able to train potential BPO workers,” Abad said.
Mayor Mauricio Domogan said Baguio City, which was one of the “first wave” cities in the march of BPO companies to the countryside, has benefited from its being an educational center in northern Luzon.
He said from two call centers in 2010, the city now has eight BPO catering to various clients in different parts of the world.
“The operation of call centers in the different parts of the city helped increase the economic activities at night and attracted skilled workers from different parts of the country,” Domogan said.
Records at the public employment and services office show the number of BPO workers have increased from 2,000 in 2010 to nearly 10,000 this year with starting salaries ranging from P20,000 to P25,000 a month.

Marian Rivera looks luminously beautiful at the presscon of “My Big Bossing”. You wouldn’t think she’s neck deep in being so busy preparing for her coming wedding to Dingdong Dantes. “Naka- kapagod ang lahat, pero okay lang, kaya pa naman,” she says. “But I’ve done some advanced tapings na for my show, ‘Marian’, para hindi ko na problemahin ngayong December ang dance numbers na ginagawa ko roon.
Tutulong pa rin ako sa promo ng ‘My Big Bossing’. I will definite- ly attend our premiere night on December 22 and join the Parade
of Stars on December 23. In “My Big Bossing”, Marian plays a TV executive producer who is at odds with Vic, the host of the show she is producing. “Magkaiba kasi ang paniniwala namin about Ryzza Mae Dizon na may third eye kaya lagi kaming nagtatalo. But eventually, we end up with each other.”
How is it working with Vic? “We’ve worked before in ‘Enteng Kabisote’ but I’m paired with his son, Oyo, not him.Nagkakasama rin kami sa ‘Eat Bulaga’ but now lang kami nagkapareha at napak- asarap niyang katrabaho dahil maalaga sa mga kasama niya.”
Right after the “My Big Bossing” presscon, Marian met Dingdong and they went to a special send-off party their fans are hosting for them at AFP Theatre.
“Habang papalapit ang araw ng aming kasal, mas lalong nararag- dagan ang excitement ko,” says Marian.
He shouldered everything. At ang sabi niya, part ng makukuha naming gifts from our sponsors, ise-share namin sa ilang charity organizations and foundations para kahit nagsisimula pa lamang ang pagsasama namin bilang official na mag-asawa, makakatulong na kami agad sa kapwa.”
We’re sure Marian will be the most beautiful bride on her wed- ding day.
As for the bride wars involving her and Heart Evangelista, she’d rather not make any comment at all. “Sa positive na lang tayo. Tigi- lan na ‘yung pagku-kumparahan.”
But as one Marian diehard says, there’s really no comparison as Marian is marrying a certified “binata” who’s one of the most eligible bachelors in the country and was once declared as one the sexiest men in Asia no less. Whereas Heart is marrying a separated man with two kids who will make her officially a “madrasta”.
Regine leads Christmas Musical drama
Regine Velasquez topbills GMA7’s Christmas special, “Himig ng Pasko”. A musical drama especially for the Yuletide season, it will air for two consecutive Saturdays this December. Joining
her is Kapuso homegrown artist Julie Anne San Jose.
“Himig ng Pasko” also revives the team up of Regine
and award-winning actor Ariel Rivera who last worked
together in the Telebabad series “Forever in my Heart,” whichaired on GMA7 ten years ago. Also in the cast are Kapuso
artists Rita de Guzman, Gerald Santos, and Jeric Gonzales together with award-winning performer Rachel Alejandro and theatre artist Joey Paras. Regine plays an overseas worker who returns to her hometown at Christmas time to fulfill her three wishes – that is to get closer to her daughter, to revive the fam- ily’s parol-making business, and to rekindle an old flame.
With all the cast members being first rate performers, viewers should not miss the singing showdown among the art- ists. ‘Himig ng Pasko” airs this December on GMA7.
Bianca and Miguel back on primetime
Miguel Tanfelix and Bianca Umali’s teen love team quickly gained lots of fans with their exposure in the hit primetime show, “Niño”.
They’ll now be back in “Once Upon a Kiss” which aims to show the sweet feeling of being awakened
with a kiss. “We’re very thankful to GMA7 for trusting us with another big project like this,”says Miguel.
“Actually, our fans can still watch us in ‘Ismol Family’ but every Saturday lang ‘yun. Gusto raw nila, araw-araw uli kaming
mapanood on primetime kaya heto, pinagbigyan sila ng GMA with ‘Once Upon a Kiss’.” Bianca,on the other hand, is very happy to be reunited with Miguel on primetime. “Happy talaga ako kasi sobrang komportable ako na si Miguel ang kasama ko. Maganda na ang rapport namin kaya walang kahirap-hirap.
At very thankful kami ni Miguel dahil hindi kami nawawa- lan ng opportunity na i-prove ang sarili namin sa lahat ng sumusuporta sa loveteam namin.”
Though they are both confident working with one another, Miguel and Bianca confessed that they feel pressured to be working with respected TV actors in “Once Upon A Kiss.” “Hindi po maaalis ‘yung pressure kasi first time naming maka- katrabaho ‘yung mga cast members,” says Bianca.
It is another original creation of the GMA Drama group under the supervision of Senior VP for Entertainment TV Lilybeth G. Rasonable; VP for Drama Redgie A. Magno; Assistant VP for Drama Cheryl Ching-Sy; Program Manager Helen Rose Sese, and Executive Producer Rebya Upalda.
Don’t put the blame on Ryzza Mae
Ryzza Mae Dizon holds the record as the most popular child star of this generation.
The Little Miss Philippines 2012 grand winner continues to entertain viewers, especially with her hosting on Eat Bulaga. On top of this, her own program “The Ryzza Mae Show”consistently rates. This makes her the youngest and most successful TV host in the country.
While Ryzza is honing her hosting skills, the
child star seems to get wrong coaching sometimes from her handlers. We chanced upon her jokingly calling Allan K “pangit na bayot” in Visaya. While it elicits laughter, that joke could send a wrong signal to kids, especially from the Visayas. But we should not put the blame on her.
Dahil siguro sumusunod lang naman siya.
Among other people around her, Ryzza’s mother Riza should be more responsible in guiding her. Pero, sabi nga ng isang kasamahan sa panulat, baka raw she also needs guidance herself. Our friend cited her act of riding the roller-coaster in Hong Kong Disneyland while pregnant with her next child.
